Kaudulla National Park; the best known for elephant safari in Sri Lanka is located in the city of Polonnaruwa, off the main Habarana-Trincomalee road.
The park has established a 6656 hectare Elephant corridor between the Somawathie Chaithya and Minneriya National Parks. Kaudulla National park can be visited on a jeep safari from Habarana, Polonnaruwa, Sigiriya and Dambulla.
The Park is home to around 250 elephants, leopards, fishing cat, sloth bear, Sambar deer and the endangered Rusty spotted Cat.
A safari in the Kaudulla National Park is an absolutely incredible wildlife spectacle. The Park offers you the opportunity to go on paddle boat rides (Catamaran rides on tank) and capture birds at a close range in their natural habitats. Going on a bumpy ride through the evergreen park is a great adventure.
The Kaudulla reservoir is the life blood that attracts herds of elephants during the dry season. There are other national parks in close proximity within that region. They are the Minneriya National Park and Hurulu eco park. The best season to visit the park is between the months of August and December.
Overview
- In addition to theĀ elephants, sambar deer, Sri Lankan axis deer, chevrotain, wild boar, Asian spoonbill, grey-headed fish eagle, painted stork and openbill stork are common visuals at Kaudulla National park. Aside from these, one could rarely capture the glimpse of leopard and sloth bear in the forest.
