The afternoon safari begins at 2 pm. This is the ideal half day tour if you have limited time on your holiday. Situated 391 km from Colombo on the southeastern coast of Sri Lanka, the Kumana bird sanctuary is a haven for ornithologists. It is the most popular bird sanctuary in Sri Lanka.
The park was established in 1938. Out of Sri Lanka’s 400 bird species, Kumana is recorded to have recorded 255 species of birds. Bird species at Kumana include the rare black-necked stork, pelicans, painted storks, spoonbills, white ibis and cormorants as well as plovers, sandpipers, snipes and many more.
Kumana is sometimes referred to as the Bundala-Kumana Bird Sanctuary due to its proximity to Bundala National Park. Together, these parks form an important area for bird conservation.
Visitors can explore Kumana National Park through organized safaris. Jeep safaris are a popular way to navigate the park’s terrain and observe the diverse bird species in their natural habitat. While bird watching is a major highlight, Kumana National Park is also home to a variety of other wildlife, including elephants, leopards, and various species of deer. The park’s vegetation ranges from dry monsoon forests to wetlands. Kumana is designated as a national park to conserve its unique ecosystems and the biodiversity it supports. Conservation efforts are in place to protect the park’s natural resources.
Before planning a visit, it’s advisable to check for any updates or changes to the park’s status, regulations, or facilities, as conditions can evolve. Additionally, Earth Lanka Events (Pvt) Ltd can provide valuable insights and enhance the bird-watching experience in Kumana National Park.
