The Lunugamvehera National Park is located in the Monaragala district in the Uva Province and is 261 KMs from Colombo accessible via Tissamaharamaya in the Southern province or via Kalawana in the Sabaragamuwa province. It is an ideal getaway for a quiet weekend since the park is not crowded with many visitors.
The park also acts as a corridor for elephants to travel between Yala National Park and Udawalawe National Park.
The Park is rich in bio diversity and is a favorable habitat for large herds of elephants, wild buffalo, wild boar, Sambar deer, Spotted dear etc. Thus it is one of the best safaris in Sri Lanka.
It is also home to 21 species of fish, 12 amphibians and 33 species of reptiles.The evergreen forest is made up mainly of Weera, Pallu, Teak etc.
Lunugamvehera National Park covers an extent of 23,498 hectares and the reservoir within the park covers 3,283 hectares, smaller in area compared with other parks in Sri Lanka.
