Kumana is renowned for its impressive bird diversity, making it a paradise for bird watchers. The park is particularly famous for hosting a multitude of migratory birds, including several species of waterfowl that visit the park’s lagoons and water bodies. The best time for bird watching at Kumana is during the migratory season, which typically occurs from April to July. During this period, a large number of birds, including waders and waterfowl, travel to Sri Lanka from regions like Siberia and Europe.

Kumana National Park is home to a wide variety of bird species, both resident and migratory. Some notable bird species that can be spotted include the Black-necked Stork, Lesser Adjutant, Eurasian Spoonbill, Great Thick-knee, and a variety of terns and gulls.

The park’s numerous lagoons, water holes, and the large Kumana Villu (a natural swamp lake) attract a diverse array of birdlife. Bird watching can be particularly rewarding around these water sources.
