Safari at Bundala Park Sri Lanka

Bundala National Park is an internationally well-known wintering ground for migratory water birds in Sri Lanka.  Situated 245 kilometres (152 mi) southeast of Colombo, Bundala National Park spreads across 6,216 hectares and became the first site in Sri Lanka to be designated a Ramsar wetland in 1991.

The main highlights of this park are the five shallow, brackish lagoons with salt pans in three of them.

Among the most frequently seen animals in Bundala National Park are deer, elephant, water birds, crocodiles, wild boar, mongooses, monitor lizards, monkeys and elephants. and several other species. In this thick jungle you can also witness the rare pangolin and the mischievous grey langur monkey.

If you take a walk cautiously along the beach at dawn, you will see various types of tracks in the sand.

Bundala national park also shelters almost 200 bird species within an area of 62-sq-km with mostly journeying from Siberia and India to winter here, arriving between August and April (December to March is the peak time). This wonderful park is also a winter home to beautiful flamingo.

Bundala Park is not popular only for animals but also for its nearly 400 plant species.

As it is a vast jungle, you will actually need a full day safari to cover most part of the area. So if you are travelling, add this Sri Lanka Safari hot spot to your itinerary.
