The Minneriya National Park in the North Central province of Sri Lanka is situated 182 KM’s from Colombo and is located along the Habarana-Polonnaruwa road. Major City closest to the park is Polonnaruwa, which is a tourist hub loaded with many sightseeing spots.
The extent of the park is about 21,000 acres. This park’s main attraction is the Minneriya tank built by King Mahasen in the 3rd Century AD. The main sources of water to the tank are from the Amban River and Elahera canal.
It is considered an area that is protected due to the catchment of Minneriya Tank and the wild life. In this park the elephants can be spotted at a very close range unlike other parks. They are found eating, bathing and playing in their natural environment. The “Gathering” is a name given to herds of Elephants who gather at the banks of the Minneriya Reservoir during the dry season. The Park is a feeding ground for Elephants dwelling in forests of Matale, Polonnaruwa and Trincomalee districts.
Around 20 species of mammals, over 150 species of birds, several uncommon types of amphibians, more than 20 species of reptiles, fish and nearly 100 species of butterflies beautify this park and it’s a must-see place for anyone.

The Area receives an average rainfall of 1500-2000 mm. The lowest and highest temperature are 20.6 Celsius to 34.5 Celsius respectively.
The main threat to the park is cutting down of trees which results in the decrease of water levels in reservoir.
The bamboo trees, evergreen trees, the grasslands and wetlands add more beauty to the environment.
